The barn

The wealth of a chieftain was based on landholdings and livestock. The cowshed, that was 32 metres long, may have housed as many as 50 cows.

Part of this area, however, was most certainly used as stables for the horses. During the winter, animals were kept indoors whereas during the summer they were outside grazing.

During the excavations, it became clear that the ground just outside one of the entrance doors was depressed due to the daily passage of animals.

Slavery was common, and slaves often had to sleep with the animals. At Borg they also tilled the earth. The principal grain was barley which has been grown in this area since the late Stone Age.
