The Viking bridge

The water coursing between Outer and Inner Borgpollen was bridged at the end of the Viking era. The bridge had been built of boards resting on rectangular log piers filled with rocks. Dated to approx. 1050 AD, it was 90 metres long and the only bridge we know of in Norway from the Viking Age. An impressive piece of engineering!

The Vikings' long, slender boats would have been able to pass between two such piers, provided part of the board cover was removed. Apart from serving as a bridge, the construction blocked the inside of Borgpollen, the heart of the Borg chieftain's realm, which would have afforded excellent control of the area.
