OUTDOOR AREA
The outdoor area at Lofotr Viking Museum is very large. The Chieftain’s House was the farm of a chieftain’s family at Borg, and therefore there are grazing areas, forests and access to the sea that were important resources in the Viking Age. Those who love nature can explore the landscape outside the Chieftain’s House and take walks to the harbour area where in summer there are extra activities.
In summer, animals of old breeds graze on the site: wild boars with their piglets, cows, horses, sheep and lambs of the North. You will meet these beautiful animals around the museum’s outdoor areas. In the harbour area there are Viking activities, the Viking ship rows or sails, and Skjeltersjåen outdoor café is open.
In winter, the outdoor area is mostly covered with snow, but at the same time it is the season for the northern lights in Lofoten.
ANIMALS ON THE FARM
In summer, animals of ancient breeds graze on the site: wild boars, cows, wild sheep and Norland’s horses. You will meet these beautiful animals around the museum’s grazing areas.
The wild boars here on Lofotr do not walk freely, but have their own enclosure near the chieftain’s house. They love to swim and always have access to plenty of water to roll around in. If you’re extra lucky, they’ve just had kids running around playfully.

THE SMITHY
The smithy, which lay between the boathouse and the chieftain’s yard, was built to such a size that the public can have room to watch the blacksmith work in the summer. The smithy burned down in July 2022.
